"That which is invisible, ungraspable, unoriginated and attributeless, that which has neither eyes nor ears nor legs - that is eternal, full of manifestation, All pervading, Subtlest of the subtle - that imperishable Being, is what the wise perceive as the Source of all Creation.”

This is the most perfect and beautiful definition of the Eternal, Changeless, Absolute Reality or Higher Consciousness, which is the substratum and the source of all creation.

(Translated from Sanskrit, by Swami Chinmayanada, of a verse in Atharva-Veda, part the ancient Hindu Scriptures, written over 5000 years ago)

Of course, the indefinable subject under discussion here, is the knowledge of the eternal, all pervasive Life Force within ourselves. We can be enlivened only in the presence of this dynamic source of the entire creation. Yet, we cannot see it with our own eyes because this is the very light that gives our eyes the ability to see everything else. This invisible field, infinite and indescribable, is the all illuminating awareness principal in every organism. Every cell in every organism knows how to function inherently, without any help.

The scriptures call the Supreme Consciousness ‘Brahman’. Brahman is Eternal, Infinite and pure Bliss. Definitely a more poetic and all encompassing description. So we’ll refer to it as Brahman.

Brahman is Self Existing. It always was, it always is, and it always will be. In fact it alone is. It is the all knowing, the Absolute Reality, the cause out of which every effect manifests. The entire physical creation is an effect. A cause can exist without an effect but an effect cannot exist without a cause. For example, droplets, waves, ice and steam can rise from and exist in the ocean, but water alone is the reality.

We are like the waves in the ocean. We go through fleeting experiences of life and death, separation and connection, joy and sadness, only because we have forgotten our relationship to our own ultimate Reality.

Our inherent nature is the same as Brahman. Pure, Blissful and Infinite. And this invisible thread of Consciousness connects us to every other manifestation of Brahman, whether living or inert, on this planet and beyond.

Why have we forgotten who we really are, and how do we find our true Self?

Maybe it is because we get too caught up in the ethereal world of names and forms. We are conditioned to believe the existence of only that which we can see, feel, touch or measure.

To put this very subjective science, from ancient philosophical texts, into modern scientific context, we go to Einstein and Quantum physics, which forms the foundation of all modern sciences.

Einstein’s words indicate the nature of this all pervading Reality as,

“Energy and mass (matter) are the same thing.”

And “The field is the sole governing agency of the particle. ( matter or material)”

The field referred to here is what we call the Supreme Consciousness.

How did this energy organise itself so intelligently into a constantly changing world of objects and organisms.

An atom was considered the smallest particle of matter. The word atom comes from Greek meaning “that which is not able to be divided”. Yet an atom is composed of tiniest bits of electrons, neutrons and protons whirling at lightening speed around an empty space. A closer look reveals that they are not matter at all but mere vibrations of energy, that give the appearance of solidity.

Merging of many atoms create a molecule. Molecules become organelles, organelles become cells, cells form tissues, which become organs, which then form organ systems, and finally evolve into a complete organism.

Life starts with a single cell. Irrespective of the species as the cells divide, they have inherent knowledge of what they are going to differentiate into, and what their purpose and function will be in an organism as they mature.

So, all matter is derived from energy. Energy is expressed as vibrations. Vibrations have movement, resonance and communication. As Ervin Lazio says “ You are a Pattern of Specific Vibrations in this Magnificent Akashic Field”. Our perceived distinctions between species and individuals are because of Vibrational Patterns specific to everything in the universe. However, these vibrational patterns are interconnected and interdependent. An individual Pattern is only viable in the collective Pattern. It emerges from a unified and all encompassing Field, the Ultimate Reality or Brahman, the substratum of all existence.

The vibrations thus created, bring forth the five subtle elements of ether, air, fire, water and earth. In their subtle form these elements are energies with information or codes that impart their qualities on every single particle of matter whether animate or inert. In addition they acquire the three qualities of Sattva ( purity, righteousness, creativity) Rajas ( action, impulsiveness, energetic) and Tamas ( inertia, resistance, lethargy) that influence the action of everything at a physical, mental and emotional level.

Let’s take a simple example of the element of air. It’s primary qualities are, that it is light, moving, changeable, cold and dry. A person with a dominant air element, or a Vata personality, as per Ayurvedic constitutional types, will display characteristics of cold hands and feet, dry skin, quick comprehension, impulsiveness, restless activity and fast speech. The same principal applies to all the subtle elements, their qualities and their influence on every organism. This is what gives each individual his or her uniqueness. The basic understanding and application of these laws of nature in life will lead us to a happier, healthier and a more fulfilled version of ourselves, living in harmony with Mother Nature and our Divine Self.

As the illusion of separation between our individual soul (jivatma ) and the Supreme Spirit (Param Atma) dissolves, we attain the highest goal of a human birth. The eternal life ever after.

Eternal, Existence, Bliss.

One ancient Vedic prayer states:

Lead me from darkness into light.

Lead me from untruth into truth.

Lead me from mortality into immortality.

When we surrender our ego ( ahamkara) at the alter of the Divine within us, the veil of ignorance (darkness) dissipates, the brilliant light of Truth shines forth, and we attain Enlightenment, the state of Eternal oneness with the Supreme.

May we always receive Blessings from our Gurus.

Thank you
